These 5 things might be why you're still job huntingBusiness people shaking hands in meeting Image: Robert Daly/Getty Images/Caiaimage Alyse Kalish for The Muse 2016-07-12 19:18:54 UTC Follow @dailymuse There are lots of big obstacles that keep you from getting an interview that are out of your control: your previous experience (or lack thereof) compared to other candidates your salary requirements and so on. While you cant always control every part of the job search process there could also be little things that are within your controlthings that are so easy to fix youll actually feel relieved at how little time itll take you. So if youre currently struggling to make it to the next round here are five changes you can make that wont require an entire job search makeover. 1. Your application is too long Heres a little tip from me to you: Every sentence in your cover letter should matter. No fluff no buzzwords no beating around the bush. If you follow this rule your cover letter will be the perfect length (at most one page) and the hiring manager just might read the whole thing. And when it comes to your resume dont you dare cross that one-page mark there either. While you may be very accomplished its unlikely that the person reading it will ever get to page two. And rather than focusing on your accomplishments he or she will very likely get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information presented there and not be able to focus in on why youre the right candidate. 2. You make careless errors You missed a word on your resume you spelled the hiring managers name wrong or you forgot to attach your cover letter. Its OK but dont let it happen again. Use spellcheck have a friend read it over and double check the requirements before hitting that submit button. And if you still happen to press send before fixing your mistake acknowledging the error could be a great way to redeem yourself. 3. Your materials dont open Wouldnt you feel horrible if you found out the reason you didnt get the interview was because the hiring manager couldnt open your file or opened it to a completely weird layout and just gave up? Yeah me too. So do your diligence to make sure it looks good no matter what by testing it on multiple browsers and smartphones to see if anything gets cut off or reformatted. Its a silly but very necessary step in the process. 4. You miss deadlines Some jobs have specific deadlinesJanuary 11 at midnightwhile others are rolling. Even if it seems like the opening is live its possible theyre not looking at new applicants at the moment. A lot of the process is a crapshoot which is why its key to check postings frequently. And if one strikes your interest my best suggestion is to apply right away (well once you have your materials together)the more you delay the more likely it is that when your application finally makes it in the company has already started considering other candidates. And if it has been up for a while it never hurts to message the hiring manager or HR department on LinkedIn to ask if theyre still looking. Especially because if they are that gives you an in. (If not well now youre on their radar.) 5. You are clearly mass emailing And finally your cover letter and emails are probably fine but if you addressed them To the Hiring Manager or copy and pasted your content word for word without even including the name of the company youre talking to youre not doing yourself any favors. Theres a reason why we talk about tailoring and personalizing your messagebecause hiring managers surprisingly can tell when theyre just another application in your pile. A generic application rarely stands out. And if its addressed to the wrong company or wrong person well youre really not going to make it through the first round. Its often times a combination of your personality and experience that really makes people want to meet you. So get personal. Start by addressing it to a specific individual (a.k.a. actually call the hiring manager by his or her name) and making sure to name the company and why youd be a good fit for that specific role. Dont let the little stuff keep you from the big goalthe interview. Even a small change could be just what you need to turn your job search around. Have something to add to this story? Student Foundations Accel Program Connects Tech Students to Top Firms Campus and Community Student Foundations Accel Program Connects Tech Students to Top Firms By Austin McCandlish | February 16 2018 Atlanta GA Click image to enlarge Hessam Mostajabi a fourth-year student majoring in business administration with a concentration in finance has long been interested in financial markets. That interest soon evolved into a passion for investment banking when he joined the Student Foundation Investments Committee during his first year at Georgia Tech. Two years later he snagged an internship as an investment banking analyst for SunTrust Robinson Humphrey. During recruitment for his internship though Mostajabi noticed that firms were overlooking Tech students. I saw how tough it was to get a foot in the door said Mostajabi. He noted that while recruiters often visit other top-tier universities Tech is usually off the radar. At Tech we are seeking recruiters out. He attributed this to Techs reputation as a school for engineers as well as a selection bias on the part of recruiters. Unsatisfied with the status quo Mostajabi conceived of a program for Tech students aimed at building networks with top investment banks and providing support to students looking for jobs in financial services. Accel offered through the Student Foundation is the realization of that idea. Accel founded by Mostajabi last year enlists second- and third-year students to undergo a process of rigorous training and preparation for internships offered by top financial firms. In addition to the resources and coordinated guidance of older students the program offers its members access to Tech alumni working at places such as Credit Suisse Bank of America and JP Morgan. The goal is to make Tech a target school for these employers said Mostajabi. New members start the program with a resume workshop followed by technical training educational seminars networking calls to alumni and mock interviews to prepare for the recruiting process. The following year students will serve as mentors to a new incoming class. Ultimately students who participate in Accel will eventually become alumni contacts for future members. Mostajabi hopes Accel will offer a support network to help students go through intense and often anxiety-inducing recruitment by top financial firms. There has never been a system in place for all of our students to go through the process together said Mostajabi. Students in Accel all help each other out. It is a very collaborative environment. The concept of Accel was met with enthusiasm by the Investments Committee. I knew the demand was there said Mostajabi who also noted that many Tech students were well qualified for top positions in financial services. Mostajabi also found that Tech has many alumni already working in top financial services firms. They can be invaluable resources for students looking to get their foot in the door but the workload of an investment banker can make regular communication difficult. Mostajabi wanted to structure Accel to serve as both a facilitator between current students and alumni and as a mechanism for growing new networks from scratch. Less than a year since its inception Accel has already expanded beyond Mostajabis original concept. Accel is reaching out to non-business majors and has broadened its scope. Originally the goal was to just help undergrads get jobs [in investment banking]. Now we also want to provide education on financial services to the broader Tech community said Mostajabi who is graduating at the end of this semester. He said that while it is hard to let go of the program he founded he is excited for its future. My vision for Accel is that when I am 50 years old I can return to Tech and see that the program is still going strong. I want to see recruiters actively seeking out Tech students. Accel is currently recruiting its second class. An information session will be held Tuesday Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. in Room 200 Scheller College of Business. Admittance involves both an application and an interview with consideration based on academic performance work experience leadership and financial proficiency. Learn more about the program here.
